About Automotive



The Academy of Automotive Technology is separated into three different areas: Diesel Mechanics (diesel), Automotive Technology, and Collision Repair. This Academy prepares students for careers in all aspects of gas / diesel engine mechanics and auto-body repair.

Diesel Mechanics

Heavy & Light Duty Trucks or Diesel Mechanics prepares students for employment as diesel engine mechanics and diesel mechanics helpers, and will include maintaining and repairing diesel engines, electrical systems, reconditioning fuel injector systems, overhauling, and engine preventive maintenance.

    The Diesel Equipment Technology class is a four-year program of study. Upon completion, students will receive a Duval County Vocational Certificate in the area of Diesel Equipment Technology. This certificate will be awarded to those who have completed a satisfactory number of objectives from our curriculum, as well as pass a written test.

    Students are encouraged to maintain a locker in the Diesel shop area with a change of clothes available at all times. Students are asked to have safety glasses ready to use in their lockers. The students furnishes the glasses. Only school-supplied locks may be used on lockers.


  • Automotive Technology

    The Automotive Technologies cluster being offered is broken down into six areas of instruction. As each one of the areas is completed the student gains a completion point for that area. Students must complete the Automotive Service Technology area 1 and 2 core before they are able to advance to the remaining areas of Automotive Service Technology -- which may be taken in any order of the student's ability.

    Each completion point achieved by the student will enable the student to expand their area of expertise in the automotive field. The student must meet both school and industry standards -- including the areas of employability skills, safety skills, math skills and communications skills -- along with a satisfactory grade in an area of training, before being considered for a recommendation from the school for employment.

    Employment opportunities will include ICE, on the job training (O.J.T), co-op Apprenticeship, A.Y.E.S. programs (dealership-sponsored courses), or placement into the academies if the student desires to train for employment with the local dealerships that sponsor those programs.
