Gateway to Florida Automotive, Truck and Motorcycle Show

Tuner cars, hot rods, muscle cars and more

School was out, but the parking lot at Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology on the Westside was full May 31.

Almost 100 classic cars, customized trucks, tuner cars, hot rods and muscle cars from all over the region were gathered for the inaugural Gateway to Florida Automobile, Truck and Motorcycle Show, hosted by the Peterson Auto Explorers and Deerwood Kiwanis clubs.

About 1,600 people visited the school's grounds during the five-hour show, eyeing Porsche race cars, Ferraris and even a 1920s Lincoln.

Kiwanis club member Jack Griffith came up with the idea for the show, which raised an estimated $5,000 for Kiwanis charities and Peterson Academies programs.

Principal Greg McCandless said it was marvelous to have so many classics and hot rods assembled for his 1,200 students. It gives them a glimpse into some of their future, he said.

"There is a technician base in Jacksonville that has to be maintained. We are primarily focused on automotive, but there are so many components," he said. "The kids who are here with mom and dad may think there is a worthwhile career in it."
